Expanding and Factorising Quadratics premium GCSE PowerPoint lesson

A complete, ready to teach GCSE maths lesson on expanding double brackets and factorising quadratics. Students use the grid method to expand brackets such as (x + 3)(x + 2), then reverse the process to factorise x² + bx + c and the difference of two squares. The x² term, the x terms and the number term are colour coded on every grid, so students can see where each part of the answer comes from.

What the lesson covers

  1. Learning objectives at three levels: must, should and could.
  2. Warm up on single brackets, multiplying negatives, x × x and number pairs, with answers.
  3. Key words: expand, factorise, quadratic and coefficient.
  4. The grid method for expanding double brackets, with FOIL shown as an alternative.
  5. Expanding: three worked examples, including negatives and (2x + 1)(x − 3), then six your turn questions with answers.
  6. Factorising: the two number rule for x² + bx + c, worked examples and the difference of two squares.
  7. Practice: factorise fully, with a full answer slide.
  8. Problem solving: the area of a garden and of a photo frame, written as expressions and factorised.
  9. Exam style question (6 marks), including a show that part, with a mark scheme.
  10. Common mistakes, an exit ticket with answers and a key points summary.
